In Class Activities
Below are a few things that we are working on in class. Links will become active once we have worked on the activity in class.

Fact: The total area of the United States is about 3,537,441 square miles. The smallest state, Rhode Island, has 1545 square miles. If these numbers are rounded to the nearest thousand you can estimate that Rhode Island is 2000/3537000 or 0.00056... of the United States. Rounded to the nearest ten thousandth, this is 0.0006.
Directions: Research other states area. You will need to find seven pairs of states that have the same area after you round their area to the nearest thousands. Then calculate their parts of the total area of the United States. You should round the areas to the nearest thousand to write the fraction. Then divide and round decimal answers to the nearest ten thousandth.
An example: The area of Wyoming is 98,000 square miles. It’s pair is Oregon. Their parts of the total area of the United States is 98000/3537000. The decimal is 0.02770... rounded to the nearest ten thousandth is 0.0277 This example is in the table for you.
